If you take your CBT at 16 you can upgrade to a limit 50cc bike when you turn 17. After 19 you are able to move to an A1 license that permits you to ride a 125cc bike without L plates and carry passengers.
The A2 is the next step. You can either upgrade from an A1 or take a direct access theory and practical test.
A1 Licence
The open road, the wind in your hair, the exhilaration of riding a motorbike. It's a great feeling, but you have to first obtain your A1 license.
The A1 is the first step on the bike licensing ladder. It permits you to ride mopeds and motorcycles up to 125cc and with the maximum power output of 11kW. It's available starting at the age of 17 and is a great option for those who want to begin their motorbike journey in a more easy way.
To get an A1 licence you will have to complete the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), and pass both a theory and two-part practical test. The CBT course is essential for motorcycle training, and can help prepare for the theory and practical tests. To pass your A1 practical test, you will require the assistance of a qualified motorcycle instructor. The test should take about 20 minutes and will include two modules. Module 1 is held at the training center, and focuses on off-road manoeuvres, such as controlled stops, a slalom, and a figure of eight. The rest of the test is performed on the road and will test your ability to control a motorbike at speed.
Module 2 will focus on riding your motorcycle through traffic and navigating junctions. You will be tested on how well you can follow road signs and understand and apply the road laws. You will also be required to demonstrate your ability to ride at a low speed, and slow control exercises such as turning left, going up and down hills, and turning U-turns.
Once you have successfully completed your A1 license, you will be capable of upgrading to the A2 licence after passing your CBT, Theory and Practical Tests. You will then be able to operate any A2 category bike and be able to carry a passenger.
A2 Licence
The A2 Licence represents the second step to obtaining a full motorcycle licence. The A2 licence is a restricted one and is only available by those aged 19 or older with a valid CBT. The A2 licence allows you to ride motorbikes with a maximum power of 47 BHP. However, bikes that exceed this power can only be used for 94 BHP.
If you choose to go the A2 route, then you must be able to pass Module 1 and Module 2 in your motorcycle test. Both tests can be booked through the same location that you make your CBT booking or the theory test. The A2 test is best for riders who have completed their CBT course quickly and are prepared financially and physically to ride the possibility of a larger motorcycle.
Module 1 of the A2 motorcycle test is an indoor session in which you'll learn how to manage your bike, including emergency stops and slow speed manoeuvring. You will then go through the road section of the test, where you must demonstrate hazard-avoidance exercises and road positioning. You will also be required to perform life-saving checks and keep a two-second distance from the vehicle in front of you. You can make minor faults up to 10 total, and that could include things like not using your mirrors, or not maintaining your distance from other vehicles.
After passing both parts of your A2 motorcycle test, you'll be allowed to ride any motorbike that falls into the A2 category. This includes the well-known Honda CB500F and Yamaha MT-07 models. While these bikes are not particularly powerful however, they are capable of handling the speed limits and offer an enjoyable, comfortable ride.

A3 Licence
The A2 Licence is a natural progression from the CBT and lets riders advance to larger bikes that have more power. It also comes with additional benefits that you can't get from the CBT for example, driving on motorways or carrying passengers. You can upgrade from CBT to the A2 license through additional training and passing the relevant practical tests. The A2 licence is valid for two years, and can be upgraded to a full, unrestricted A licence after two years.
The first step in obtaining your A2 license is to be able to pass the Compulsory Base Training (CBT) test and Motorcycle Theory Test. Once you've met these requirements, you are ready to take the Module 1 or Module 2 practical test. The module 1 test is about proving your ability to safely ride on a closed circuit while the module 2 test involves moves on the open road.
During the A2 practical test, you will need to be able to demonstrate excellent ability to observe and anticipate hazards on the road. You read more should also be able to utilize the correct road positioning and execute controlled maneuvers. For instance, you need to be able to execute U-turns and perform the figure of eight. You should be able to control your bike at a slow speed such as when turning at intersections, or responding to traffic signals.
After passing your A2 test you can begin working towards the full A license. This can be done by either passing the direct entry exam or taking the progressive access route. To be eligible for the direct entry route, you must pass the theory test and complete the mod 1 and module 2 practice tests on a bicycle that has at 54bhp or more.
The A1 and A2 licences are different from the rest of the motorbike licenses because they are restricted by weight-to-power ratio not engine cc's. Even 600cc bikes may be A2 conforming if fitted with restrictor kits. It's important to know that not all bikes claiming to be A2 compliant are actually A2 compliant. A4 Licence
The A4 Licence enables motorists to drive vehicles with more than three wheels. This licence includes trucks, buses and coaches. It also covers vehicles transporting dangerous goods. Drivers must pass a criminal record test to qualify for the license. The Digital Driving Licence displays important details, including the date of issue and classes of vehicles in which the motorist is certified to drive.
To obtain an A1 to A4 licence drivers must attend a driving school or local transportation office. They also must pass a physical test. The training course lasts about 5 hours (1 day) and consists of an instruction on driving etiquettes, defensive driving and related laws.
After the application has been approved The driver will then receive an application notice that must be displayed on their location. They'll be charged a cost that varies according to the value at which they can charge for the premises. After paying the fee, a driver will receive a 'licence summaries by mail. They should keep the other pages of their licence in a secure place, as they may be asked to show them by police or council officers.
